Biography

Kirk Cantrell is a senior research scientist who directs projects related to characterization and modeling of the fate and transport of contaminants in water, sediments, and soils, waste form development and behavior, and carbon sequestration. Major responsibilities include project management, task management, management of junior staff; writing of proposals, reports, journal articles, and presentations; development of test plans, and participation in expert review panels for groundwater remediation systems at U.S. Department of Energy sites. Characterization methods that he uses include ICP-MS, ICP-OES, IC, radiochemical techniques (gamma spectroscopy, wet chemical separation followed by alpha spectroscopy or scintillation counting for actinide and 90Sr analysis), XRD, XRF, SEM/EDS, selective extractions, and other wet chemical techniques. Dr. Cantrell also occasionally employs more specialized characterization techniques such as XPS, synchrotron based X-ray analysis methods, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Dr. Cantrell typically uses data acquired with these characterization methods as input data for geochemical modeling with codes such as Geochemist’s Workbench for evaluating the systems under investigation. These tools can be used to calculate saturation indices, speciation and surface complexation (adsorption); important information for determining the phase associations of contaminants and future transport. Dr. Cantrell has been involved in all phases of environmental remediation including; research, development, design, and field testing of innovative remediation technologies, risk assessments, remedial investigations, feasibility studies, and negotiations with regulatory agencies. Dr. Cantrell has worked with all types of contaminants in subsurface environments including radionuclides, toxic metals (including acid mine drainage), and toxic organic compounds.
